Cod Tacos - Cod Fish Tacos
These Cod Tacos are pure taco perfection. This streamlined recipe is easy to make, but not lacking in flavor, making it the ideal weeknight dinner to add to your rotation. This dinner feels bright, vibrant, and different, yet it is actually really simple to make.
My Cod Fish Tacos start with tender, flaky cod topped with Homemade Taco Seasoning, then baked or air-fried. Keeping the fish away from oil and deep-frying. You can top it simply with a store-bought pico de gallo, or I've included my recipe below, and then the tacos come to life with my Chipotle Lime Fish Taco Sauce. This is a perfect sauce for weekday dinner because it uses Greek yogurt instead of mayonnaise, keeping these tacos light and healthy.
If you want something extra, you could also top them with my Greek Yogurt Cilantro-Lime Slaw or Homemade Guacamole, but I like how simple these are, letting the buttery cod flavor shine. You can have two hearty tacos for around 300 calories and nearly 45 grams of protein.
My family, including the twins, loves Cod Tacos, so this is always a hit with everyone. We alternate this recipe and my Blackened Shrimp Tacos every few weeks.

Ingredients:
Here's an overview of what you'll need to make this Cod Tacos recipe, but keep scrolling for the full recipe amounts.
For the Cod:
- Cod Fillets: Look for fresh or frozen cod filets. If the cod is frozen, thaw it in the fridge overnight. You'll need 4-6-ounce portions without the skin, either cod loins or cod fillets. You can use any variety of cod, including Alaskan cod, Pacific cod, and black cod, also known as sablefish. The fish should not have a stinky or fishy aroma. To prep the fish, pat it dry with a paper towel. Sometimes frozen cod can retain water, so make sure to dry it and remove any excess moisture to help it cook and taste better.
- Taco Seasoning: I like to make my own Taco Seasoning, but if you don't have time, here's a great store-bought Taco Seasoning. The taco seasoning brings out the perfect flavors you'll need for the tacos without adding many ingredients. It's a great blend of chili powder, ground cumin, paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper. You could also use a chili lime seasoning.
- Olive Oil Spray: I like to use an olive oil spray when cooking in the air fryer or baking in the oven to keep the calories down. This is one that I like. You can also use avocado oil. You can also drizzle the fish with olive oil or brush on melted butter.
- Salt and Black Pepper
For the Pico de Gallo:
If you are short on time, you can use store-bought pico de gallo or your favorite salsa, but if you want to make it from scratch, here is what you will need.
- Tomato: You'll need some tomato for the base of the pico. I like to use Roma, but I will pick whatever type looks the best at the store.
- Red Onion: Adds a pungent bite.
- Jalapeno: I like adding a touch of jalapeno to my pico. For less spice, remove the seeds and white part inside the jalapeno. For more spice, leave it on. If you don't like jalapeno, just leave it out or substitute bell pepper.
- Cilantro: Fresh cilantro is a key flavor. Look for bright, fresh leaves.
- Lime: You'll need fresh lime juice, not from a bottle.
Fish Taco Sauce-
Follow my simple recipe for Fish Taco Sauce, but here's what you will need.
- Greek Yogurt: The base of this easy and flavorful taco sauce is Greek yogurt. You plain Greek yogurt. Fat-free or full-fat will work depending on what you keep in the fridge and your dietary preferences. You could also substitute sour cream.
- Chipotles in Adobo Sauce: This little jar of chipotles is packed with yummy flavor! You'll want to move the actual peppers to the side of the jar and scoop out the dark red juice they are soaking in. That juice gives this sauce its flavor. It can be powerful, so start with less and add more to taste. You can usually find it in the Hispanic section of the grocery store, and find it online here.
- Lime: Use the other half of the lime to finish off this sauce.
To Finish the Cod Tacos-
- Tortillas: You can pick whatever type of tortilla suits your preferences and diet, including whole-wheat tortillas, small corn tortillas, flour tortillas, or even hard taco shells.
- Garnish: Extra Cilantro and Lime Wedges
